Maria Pita

Maria Pita (Maria Mayor Fernandez de Camara y Pita) is a famous Spanish woman who liberated the city of A Coruña at a time when the English commander was already preparing to raise a new flag over the walls. Shouting "Whoever has honor will follow me!" she killed the enemy commander (what exactly she killed - versions differ). The twenty thousandth English army was demoralized and retreated from the walls of the seemingly captured city. This happened on May 4, 1589. In the city itself, a monument was erected in honor of Maria Pita and a museum was created.
