Charles or Charles de Bourbon (1686 - 1714) - grandson of Louis XIV, Duke of Berry and Duke of Alencon. Younger son of Louis the Great Dauphin and Maria Anne of Bavaria. From birth he received the title of Duke of Berry, shortly before his death, the king also granted him the titles of Duke of Alencon and Angoulême. In addition, he bore the title of Count of Pontier.
On July 6, 1710, he married his second cousin, Marie Louise of Orleans, daughter of Philip II of Orleans. They had three children, but none lived more than a year.
After Louis the Great Dauphin died in 1711, in 1712 his eldest son Louis, Duke of Burgundy, and in 1713, according to the Treaty of Utrecht, his middle brother, King Philip V of Spain, renounced his rights to the French throne, it was expected that the duke Berry will become regent with his young nephew, the son of the Duke of Burgundy, after the death of his grandfather. However, in 1714 he died in a hunting accident (internal injuries after falling from a horse), leaving no heir.
With his death, the only descendant of Louis XIV who had the right to the French throne was the 4-year-old great-grandson of the aged king, the future Louis XV. The death of the Duke of Berry forced Louis XIV to legitimize his illegitimate sons, the Dukes of Manx and Toulouse, as princes of the blood, but after the king's death on September 1, 1715, the Paris Parliament canceled this act, and the regency went to the father-in-law of the Duke of Berry, Duke of Orleans.
