Nicolas de Largilliere
Nicolas de Largilliere (1656-1746).
Nicola de Largillier, French painter. He studied in Antwerp with Anthony Goubaud, then in Paris with A.F. von der Mehlen. He traveled to England several times, where he helped Peter Lely, who worked at the court of Charles II. The richness of color and the atmosphere of luxury in the wonderful portraits of the master, painted in his mature period of creativity, remind of the Flemish roots of his art. From the Flemish school, Largillier's art has features such as warm colors, wide thick strokes, wavy lines that give dynamism to the paintings.
In Paris, he met the famous and influential artist Charles Lebrun, became a member of the Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture, later its director, and at the end of his life an adviser.
Brilliant control of color and vividness of the stroke attracted many celebrities of that time: actresses, public figures, famous preachers to his studio. Among the most famous models of the painter were Pierre Daniel Hue, Bishop of Avranches, Cardinal de Noaye, the Duclos family and President Lambert with his family.
