Calzone is a prime example of Italian cuisine, a typical dish for the center and south of Italy.
Calzone is a pie that is actually a closed form of a pizza made in the shape of a crescent moon.
It’s just that Milanese chefs decided at one time that they shouldn’t immediately show the delicious fillings to customers, they need to be hidden and let everyone who tries this dish have a surprise. To do this, a round layer of dough covered with filling was folded in half, gently pinched the edges with your fingers and baked in the oven. It was believed that, having tasted calzone for the first time and feeling the taste of juicy minced meat, herbs, spices and crunchy dough, at first you experience simply unearthly bliss, and then you light up with passion - that's why this kind of pizza was dubbed a hidden passion.
In general, calzone is the most popular and delicious pizza in Italy. The recipe hasn't changed for two hundred years. In restaurants, calzones are usually prepared according to an individual order (in terms of filling), greased with olive oil and baked, and poured with some kind of hot sauce before serving. In addition, calzone is often used as a classic appetizer or somewhat atypical dessert.
The name calzone is translated from Italian as pant leg. The dough in a calzone is the same as in a pizza. Typical ingredients are also used as the filling: the classic version of calzone is with tomatoes and mozzarella, maybe with cabbage. Other popular fillings: smoked ham and cheese, tomatoes and zucchini, salami, onions and peppers, cheese and parsley, spinach, beef, chicken and potatoes.
