Vladimir. Church of the Intercession on the Nerl

The Church of the Intercession on the Nerl is called a masterpiece of world architecture, the pinnacle of creativity of Vladimir masters of the heyday of the Vladimir-Suzdal principality. The temple was dedicated to a new holiday in Russia - the Intercession of the Virgin.
The Church of the Intercession on the Nerl was built in 1165.
The place for the construction of the church is a floodplain meadow at the confluence of the Nerl River into the Klyazma.
Since every spring there was a wide flood here, a high foundation was specially built under the temple - an artificial hill made of clay and cobblestones, in which the foundations of the future building were laid. Outside, this hill was faced with white stone slabs. When the Nerl floods in the spring, the church remains on a small island, reflected in the fast-flowing waters that rush right up to its walls.
