Nanette Heine, née Kaula, is one of the 36 most beautiful European women of the 19th century. Nanette Heine was born into the family of a banker, head of the Munich Jewish community. "Beautiful Nani", as its inhabitants called it. She was so beautiful that King Ludwig I of Bavaria commissioned his court painter Josef Karl Stieler to paint her portrait and place it in the "Gallery of Beauties" in the Nymphenburg Palace. This was one of the most beloved portraits of the king, it is this image that is found on snuff boxes, cups, plates and other souvenirs that are produced at the Nymphenburg Palace. Thus, with these souvenirs, Nanette Heine entered the houses of the inhabitants of Munich. Nanette is the only one in the gallery who is dressed in a simple outfit like a "beautiful Jewess". In the portrait, she is in a purple and black velvet dress, decorated only with a golden arrow in her hair and a brooch.
A series of portraits of beautiful women was made by Joseph Stieler, commissioned by King Ludwig I for the Munich residence. Painted in 1827-1850, the paintings are guided by the ideal of beauty of Ludwig I, and not by the social status of those portrayed.
