The portrait shows the Grand Duchess Maria Pavlovna (1854 - 1920), wife of the Grand Duke Vladimir Alexandrovich (1847-1909), the third son of Alexander II.
The peculiarity of the portrait is that Maria Pavlovna is depicted wearing a sapphire parure, a luxurious jewelry set from the treasures of the Romanovs' house.
Upon the death of her husband, the princess replaced him as president of the Academy of Arts (1909-1917) and, after him, took over the patronage of the Berlin Orthodox Holy Prince Vladimir Brotherhood (1909-1920). She occupied an exceptional position in the court society. She was quite ambitious, they said that even Empress Alexandra Feodorovna was afraid of Maria Pavlovna's intrigues and tried to stay away from her. The court official, General AA Mosolov, wrote about her in his émigré memoirs: "There was no court in St. Petersburg more popular and more influential than the court of Grand Duchess Maria Pavlovna, the wife of Vladimir Alexandrovich."
