Second daughter of the Grand Duke of Hesse-Darmstadt Ludwig IV and Princess Alice, granddaughter of Queen Victoria of England. Her younger sister Alisa later, in November 1894, became the Russian Empress Alexandra Fedorovna, having married the Russian Emperor Nicholas II. On June 3, 1884, in the Court Cathedral of the Winter Palace, she was married to Grand Duke Sergei Alexandrovich, brother of the Russian Emperor Alexander III.
