Bachkovo monastery

The Bachkovo Monastery of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary is located in the western part of the Rhodope Mountains, on the banks of the Chepelare River. This is the second most important holy monastery in Bulgaria. The monastery was founded in 1083 by the Gvizantine commander of Georgian origin Grigory Bakuriani and his brother Abaziy, who left their will for the construction of the monastery. Patriarch Euthymius spent the last years of his life in prison here. The monastery was repeatedly destroyed and burned. The church of the Holy Archangels of the XII century, painted in 1841 by Zachary Zograf and his disciples, and the tomb have preserved its original appearance. There is a miraculous icon of the Most Holy Theotokos in the church.
