St. Andrew's Church in Kiev

An ancient legend says that it was on the spot where this magnificent temple will be built almost fifteen hundred years later that the Apostle Andrew the First-Called during his journey from Korsun along the Dnieper in the first century AD hoisted the Cross and said that the grace of God resides here and a beautiful city will be built. After the founding of Kiev and the Baptism of Rus, churches were built on this site, which were mostly wooden, therefore they were repeatedly destroyed and rebuilt. That is why, by order of Empress Elizabeth Petrovna, the foundation of a stone church was laid on the site of the Andreevsky bastion of the Kiev fortress in 1749. The project of this cathedral was created by the court architect Rastrelli.
