Pau Castle is located in the city of the same name, in the ancient historical region of Béarn in the south of France. The castle has been known since the Middle Ages. It was erected on a hill overlooking the Gav de Pau river. In this castle on December 13, 1553, Henry IV, King of France and King of Navarre, was born. Po Castle is surrounded by a palisade of stakes (French pieux, béarn pau), symbolizing loyalty and sincerity. The name of the castle comes from them. Gaston III de Foix, better known as Gaston Phoebus, made a significant contribution to the history of the castle. During his reign, a stone keep was erected 33 meters high, on which the inscription was engraved: "Febus me fe", meaning in Béarnian "Phoebus made me." Currently, the castle has been turned into a museum, where objects from different eras are exhibited (starting from the era of Henry IV). The collection is especially rich in exhibits from the time of the Restoration.
