The Luxembourg Palace is a palace built for Maria de Medici in 1615-31. in the Luxembourg Gardens in Paris, on the site of the estate of the late Duke Pinet of the Luxembourg family (hence the name).
The style is transitional from the Renaissance to the Baroque. Commissioned by Maria de Medici, the artist Rubens painted twenty-four canvases for this palace with scenes from the life of the Queen. A few months after the completion of construction, Louis XIII removed it from Paris. After the death of Mary, her son Gaston d'Orléans and her granddaughter, "The Great Mademoiselle", lived here.
During the Nazi occupation, the palace housed the headquarters of the Luftwaffe in France, Hermann Goering periodically stayed there, and Field Marshal of Aviation Hugo Sperle lived in it for a long time. The French Senate currently sits here.
