The temple was built according to ancient canons in the shape of an eight in 2000 by ordinary people - a professor at the University. Herzen and the summer resident Andrey Lyamkin, who supported his idea, who lives near Vuoksa. The oldest church of the Ascension in Kolomenskoye became an example for the architectural solution.
Despite its relatively young age, the temple has already managed to get into the Guinness Book of Records. It was recognized as the only church in the world built on a small island, the foundation of which is a monolithic rock protruding from the water.
Although there are other “temples-on-water” in the world, including churches in Volgograd, Kondopoga, the Church of the Assumption in Slovenia and a church in the town of Kalyazino on the Volga that is surprisingly similar to the Priozersk temple, it is the islet on Vuoksa that surprises visitors with its location.
The temple bears the name of one of the twelve disciples of Jesus Christ - according to church legends, he was in these places and baptized people in local waters. Andrew the First-Called is the patron saint of all sailors, therefore, every ship must have the St. Andrew's flag, and, perhaps, the water surrounding the church from all sides became a reference to this fact. The area of the island is only 100 square meters. You can only get here by boat.
