The ballet The Nutcracker, staged at the Mariinsky Theater (2001) based on sketches by the famous artist Mikhail Shemyakin, was once called an unprecedented theater project.
Mikhail Shemyakin (b. 1943) - Russian and American painter, graphic artist and sculptor, theater artist.
Shemyakin conveys the spirit of Hoffmann with elements of grotesque and humor, oddities and reincarnations. The artist has endowed the classical images, to which the viewer is accustomed, with completely new and unusual details, masks, costumes, huge decorations with numerous garlands. Each picture has its own mysticism, its own philosophy. Time and success have rated the ballet as a classic.
Shemyakin's sketches became not only an interesting graphic project, but also one of the most complete illustrations of the famous fairy tale of Hoffmann
