Kasimov (formerly Tat. Hankirman, until 1376 - Gorodets Meshchersky, until 1471 - New Nizovoy City) is a city in Russia, in the Ryazan region. on the river Oke.
The city of Kasimov was founded by the Suzdal prince Yuri Dolgoruky in 1152 as a stronghold of the Finnish Slavic tribes who settled here.
A special era in the history of the city of Kasimov is the period from the middle of the 15th to almost the end of the 17th century. In 1452, the Moscow prince Vasily II the Dark gave the city to Kasim Khan, who had fled from Kazan. Kasim Khan devotedly served the Russian people and for this in 1471 the city was renamed in his honor. With the formation of the Kasimov Tatar Khanate in the Meshchersky Territory, the city of Kasimov became its capital. The specific Kasimov kingdom, which was directly dependent on the Grand Duke of Moscow, existed for over 200 years.
During this period, there was a close intertwining of two cultures - Russian and Tatar. The appearance of the city and its environs has changed. In Kasimov, you can see how the mosque peacefully coexists with the Orthodox church, the Russian language with the Tatar, and the traditions of the two peoples organically fit into the life of the inhabitants of the modern city.
