Vologda
Cathedral hill / popular name of the square / - a historical place, a hill on the right bank of the Vologda River next to the St. Sophia Cathedral.
During the time of Ivan the Terrible, this particular place was chosen for the construction of the Vologda Kremlin, and scientists in the 19th century suggested that Ivan the Terrible was going to build a stone palace on the Cathedral Hill and even laid the foundation for it. The historian and philologist S.P.Shevyrev went further than the rest, who believed that the basements of the buildings on Cathedral Hill were intended for the famous Liberia - the legendary library of Ivan the Terrible.
Now it is a favorite vacation spot for the townspeople in winter and summer.
