Vitre Castle - a powerful fortification of the 11th century rises on a rocky promontory overlooking the valley of the Vilen River. Having survived several fires and related transformations, the fortress acquired its modern appearance only in 1912. The castle got its name in honor of its founder, Baron Robert de Vitre, who began construction of the building in 1060. The castle was rather considered a fort and performed defensive functions, protecting the Duchy of Brittany from the invasion of the French kings.
