St. Wolfgang Catholic Church. Austria

St. Wolfgang Church is located in the town of the same name on the shore of Lake Wolfgangsee. It is one of the few churches in the world with two altars. When, by order of the Pope, the Gothic altars in Catholic churches were changed to Baroque, they did not demolish the old altar in this church. An old legend is connected with the history of the church in St. Wolfgang. The devil is depicted in one of the side chapels of the temple. Legend has it that the devil helped St. Wolfgang in the construction. For a long time the priest could not choose a place for the construction of the temple. He decided to build a church in the place where his ax would fall. The ax fell directly on the shore of the Wolfgangsee. It was not easy to build a temple near the water, the priest was upset. The devil found out about this and offered his help. In return, Wolfgang had to give him the soul of the one who was the first to cross the threshold of the new temple. The church was soon built. Wolfgang prayed earnestly - he could not allow the devil to take over the soul of a Christian. God heard his prayers and sent a white wolf to the temple. The wolf entered the church first. The devil grabbed the beast and dragged it into the hole in the ceiling. Ceiling frescoes with scenes from this legend and a mysterious hole in the vault of the temple have survived to this day.
