Forchtenstein Castle (Austria) is located on steep and scenic slopes in a romantic setting. This castle was built in the middle of the 14th century for the Mattersdorfer family. Subsequently, the castle was bought by the Esterhazy family, who significantly rebuilt and expanded it. Between 1529 and 1683, Forchtenstein was one of the fortresses that protected Austria from Turkish raids. When the Turkish threat lost its relevance, the castle was turned into a museum and today it houses one of the finest private collections of weapons in Austria. In addition to war booty and weapons, there are jewels of the Esterhazy princely family, their family portraits, family heirlooms and a collection of furniture of that time. In the courtyard of the castle, you can see the equestrian statue of the first prince Esterhazy, whose descendants still own the castle today.
