Racconigi Castle (Italian Castello Reale di Racconigi) is a country residence of the Piedmontese monarchs in the town of Racconigi near Cuneo. Among other residences of the House of Savoy, it is protected by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site
In the Middle Ages, the castle belonged to the Margraves of Saluzzo. In 1630 it passed into the possession of the younger, Carignan branch of the House of Savoy. The current building of the castle was built in the second half of the 17th century according to the project of Guarino Guarini. At the end of the 18th century, it was brought into line with the newfangled principles of classicism. The wings were completed under Charles Albert. In 1904, the last Italian monarch, Umberto II, was born in the castle.
Of great interest to lovers of gardening art is the regular park in Racconigi, the creation of which is attributed to Le Nôtru himself. Among other park pavilions, there is a Russian-style dacha built to accommodate Nicholas II, who signed the Russian-Italian agreement of 1909 in Racconigi.
The Racconigi castle also hosted weddings of members of the Savoyard dynasty, for example, on November 10, 1684, celebrations dedicated to the marriage between Prince Emanuele Filiberto of Savoy-Carignan and Maria Caterina d'Este, Princess of Modena, took place here.
