Manpupuner or Pillars of weathering (Mansi dummies) is a geological monument in the Troitsko-Pechora region of the Komi Republic. The weathering pillars of Manpupuner are considered one of the seven wonders of Russia.
There are several legends about their origin. We will tell you one of them.
In ancient times, the Mansi people were rich, great and powerful. Any man could easily kill a bear alone. The yurts were full of furs, and the hunt was always successful. Such a prosperity to the people was ensured by the spirits that lived on a mountain called Yalping Nyer. Ruled by the great people Kuuschay, who had a beautiful daughter Aim and a fearless son Pigrychum. Aim learned about the unearthly beauty of a giant named Torev. He decided, at all costs, to marry the Mansi beauty, but Aim refused him. When Pygrychum was hunting in the mountains, Torev appeared in front of the walls of the fortress along with his brothers. The giants entered into battle with the Mansians. With a huge club, the giant destroyed the tower from which Ayim called to the spirits. After that, the angry Torev struck a blow at the crystal castle, which scattered into hundreds of thousands of fragments throughout the Urals. The girl had to hide under cover of night in the mountains with the surviving soldiers. Even before sunrise, Aim heard the stomp of approaching giants, but at that moment her brother Pygrychum appeared, who held in his hands a sharp sword and a shining shield, bestowed on him by the spirits of Yalping-Nyer Mountain. The first rays of the rising sun reflected from the shield and bright light hit the giants. In the blink of an eye, Torev turned to stone. His brothers started to run, but the magic of the spirits made them petrified too. They remained forever in the place that the Mansi people called the "Mountain of Stone Idols".
