As you know in medieval times, Finland was part of the Danish-Swedish kingdom, which was constantly at war with Russia. Hence the need arose to strengthen the eastern borders. For this, the regent of Sweden, the Danish knight Eric Tott, having received an order on this matter in 1475, began the construction of an impregnable fortress on the rocky island of the largest Finnish lake Saimaa. The fortress was built for about 25 years. A monument to this courageous knight was erected near the castle.
First, the Swedes called the fortress Nyslott, which in Swedish meant "new castle", then the name appeared - Nyslott. Later, in honor of the Norwegian king Olaf Haraldsson (his reign - 1015-1028) - the most revered Christian saint in the countries of Scandinavia, the castle was named Olafsborg (Swedish) or Olavinlinna (Fin.).
