The tiny island of Mainau is located in Lake Constance near the town of Konstanz. Due to the special conditions, probably the proximity of a huge reservoir, a unique microclimate has developed here, allowing even tropical plants to grow. The cultivation of flowers on the island was started by its first owner, Prince Nikolaus von Esterhazy, and continued in the second half of the 19th century by its current owners - representatives of the Swedish royal house. The Grand Duke Frederick I broke alleys here, planted exotic plants, which he brought from his numerous travels, greenhouses and a rose garden were also erected. The prosperity of the island is associated with the name of Gustav Lennart Nikolaus Paul Bernadotte, who renounced the throne and devoted himself to his wife and the island-garden.
