Queen Victoria and Prince Albert arrived in Paris with their eldest children, the Prince of Wales and Princess Victoria, on 18 August 1855.
Crowds of soldiers and civilians shouted greetings to the British guests, military bands played bravura melodies, and loud artillery salutes were heard in the distance.
