The small town of Mittenwald, nestled at the foot of the Bavarian Alps in the very south of Germany, just five kilometers from the border with Austria, is a typical provincial town. But at the same time, for more than 700 years it has enjoyed European and world fame. Its inhabitants have turned their houses into artistic canvases, creating a kind of street opening day. The art of facade painting has been popular here for many centuries. Each homeowner considered it an honor to hire artists and decorate the façade of their home with a work of so-called "air painting". Goethe, who visited Mittenwald in 1786, called the city "a picture book coming to life".
