Quedlinburg Abbey is an imperial convent on Castle Hill, founded in 936 on the territory of the castle of the first German king Henry I by his widow, Queen Matilda.
In the Middle Ages, the monastery was one of the largest and most important in the Holy Roman Empire of the German nation. It was ruled by an abbess, whose authority was subject to the entire city, which arose at the foot of the Castle Hill. The first abbess of the monastery was the granddaughter of Henry I and Queen Matilda, daughter of Emperor Otto I, Matilda. In the monastery lived unmarried representatives of the noble families who wanted to lead a godly lifestyle. The abbey lasted almost 900 years and was dissolved only in 1802. In 1802-1803 the monastery was the property of Prussia, from 1807 to 1814 it belonged to the Kingdom of Westphalia. In 1994, the monastery church, along with the Old Town and the castle, was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.
