Cathedral Church of the Smolensk Icon of the Mother of God

The Cathedral Church of the Smolensk Icon of the Mother of God is the oldest church at the Novodevichy Convent in Moscow. It was built in the first third of the 16th century. It has several chapels dedicated to the apostles Prokhor and Nikanor, the miracle of the Archangel Michael, the martyrs Vera, Nadezhda, Lyubov and their mother Sophia. The architectural solution of the Cathedral Church of the Smolensk Icon of the Mother of God is similar to the architectural style in which the Assumption Cathedral of the Moscow Kremlin was built. The construction of the Smolensk Cathedral is believed to have been carried out by Aleviz Novy. According to another version, it could be the architect Nestor, he died during the construction of this cathedral.

The cathedral has preserved frescoes that were created in the years 1526-1530. You can also admire the beautiful iconostasis installed in the cathedral in 1683-1686.
