In the city of Windsor, in the county of Berkshire, there is one of the most significant, symbolic and unusual buildings in Great Britain - Windsor Castle, the main residence of the royal family. It has long become a symbol of the supreme power in England - the majestic structure built more than 900 years ago has always remained the residence of the country's rulers. Windsor Castle was founded by William the Conqueror on the royal hunting grounds of that time (now Great Windsor Park), after the Norman conquest of England in 1066. It gradually grew, was rebuilt and reconstructed by subsequent monarchs - from Henry II to the now living Elizabeth II. The residence of the kings in Windsor is distinguished by an unusual form - in the center is the tallest building of the complex - the Round Tower, from which two asymmetrical wings, called chambers, diverge. The unified architectural complex includes the Royal Apartments, the Lower Chambers, the Gate of King Henry VIII, the North Terrace, the State Apartments, the Edward III Tower and other buildings.
And now Windsor Castle remains the place where the royal family prefers to spend all their free time from the performance of royal duties; receptions of distinguished foreign guests and solemn ceremonies associated with especially significant family events and anniversaries are held here. The castle's lavish interiors are adorned with some of the most outstanding paintings and art from the royal collection.
