Bergedorf Castle is the only surviving castle in the city of Hamburg. It is built in the old village of Bille, on the right side of Hamburg, in the oldest part of the city. As everyone knows, Hamburg was a city of merchants, and such attributes of the aristocracy as palaces and castles were alien to him. And only Bergedorf has preserved a small water castle. It was built at the beginning of the 13th century, when Bergedorf was under Danish rule and passed either to Lübeck or Hamburg. Today, the castle houses the Mountain Village Museum, a branch of the Hamburg History Museum, which holds exhibitions about the culture of the region. Occasionally, classical music concerts are held in the courtyard, and recently Hamburgers have developed a tradition of getting married inside the castle walls.
