The 13th century Mauterndorf Castle is the main attraction of the town of the same name near Salzburg. In the 16th century, under Archbishop Leonhard von Koitschach, it was expanded. This attractive medieval castle with perfect proportions is located in a picturesque setting. The rooms are richly decorated with stucco; the interior of the castle also deserves attention. But still the most interesting thing is the beautiful chapel of St. Henry (Emperor Henry II) with excellent frescoes of the 14th century depicting the coronation of the Virgin Mary on a rainbow, and a carved altar of the 15th century. The castle was successfully restored in the 20th century. In the southern tower of the castle there is a museum of local lore, a museum of hunting trophies, etc.
