One of the best-preserved and most impressive castles in the canton of St. Gallen is Werdenberg Castle, located in the town of the same name. Werdenberg Castle belongs to the type of fortress in which the main building and the tower are combined into one whole fortification. The castle was founded by Rudolph von Montfort in 1230. In 1404 it was captured by the Austrians. In the next century it belonged either to the city of Lucerne or to the abbey of St. Gallen. In 1835 the head of the Hilti family acquired the castle and set up a pharmacy and a doctor's office in the castle. Frida Hilty bequeathed the castle to the Abbey of St. Gallen. After the castle was renovated and restored to its original form, it was opened to tourists. Now it has a different purpose - it has become a historical museum.
