The Forbidden City houses the Palace of Serenity and Longevity. The famous Nine Dragon Screen Wall (Jiulongbi - Nine Dragon Screen Wall) stands in front of its southern gate.
For a thousand years, the dragon has been the talisman of China. The emperor was the son of the dragon and his incarnation. China is considered the land of the dragon, and the Chinese are its offspring.
The Nine Dragon Wall was built in 1773 when Emperor Qianlong (乾隆) of the Qing Dynasty renovated the Palace of Serenity and Longevity. The Wall of Nine Dragons, which stands on a marble base, is 29.4 meters long and 3.5 meters high. It depicts nine dragons playing with pearls over the waves of the ocean.
The colors of the dragons are yellow, blue, purple and white, with a yellow dragon in the center as a symbol of imperial power. The images themselves on the wall panel are made of 270 glazed tiles. The number 270 is divisible by 9 and 5, and in ancient China, the numbers five and nine in various combinations mean the supreme status of their owner. The Emperor was often called "His Majesty Nine and Five".
