Maiderslot Castle was built in 1280 by Earl Floris V to collect duties from merchants. In 1296 the count was assassinated by his own vassals. At that time, the castle looked the same as it does now (the walls are high, along the perimeter there is a deep moat, immediately behind it is a plum garden).
In 1609, Peter Cornelis Hooft became the new owner of Maiderslot and marked the beginning of the castle's "golden age". Theatrical plays were staged here, music was played, songs were performed, and there was an art society here that went down in history under the name of Maiderkring. In the 18th century, Maiderslot served as a prison for a short time. The castle is now a state museum.
