A short distance from Hellbrunn, south of Salzburg, is the small neo-Gothic castle of Anif. Previously, it served as a country residence, but nowadays it has been swallowed up by the city. The earliest mention of this building dates back to the 15th century. From 1693 to 1803, the owners of this summer residence were the Bishops of Himze. After the church separated from the state, the castle was sold, and Count Alois Arko-Štepperg became its new owner. He turned the residence into a neo-gothic castle in the English style.
The castle is famous for the fact that on November 13, 1918, at the very end of the First World War, King Ludwig III of Bavaria signed his abdication there.
Today the castle is a private property, so you can only see it from the outside.
