Despite the sparse landscape around, only partially preserved remains of the fortress, the history and events that took place 2000 years ago are more interesting than the photographs themselves. In the Judean Desert above the Dead Sea is the Masada fortress. Masada is a powerful fortress perched on top of a huge cliff that rises near the shores of the Dead Sea. The geographical position of the fortress in the zone
the waterless desert, far from human settlements, and the natural inaccessibility made it a safe haven. Herod, king of Judea, appreciating the strategic advantages of Masada, made it his winter residence. The place served as a refuge for hermits and rebels - the future Jewish king David was hiding here from King Saul. Here, in the cave, John the Baptist lived until the age of 30, who subsequently baptized Jesus Christ. Throughout 73 A.D. 8 thousand Roman soldiers stood around the fortress in eight camps. They were opposed by 900 defenders of the fortress. They all preferred death, but did not leave behind a single living soul, over which the Romans could outrage.
This fortress is one of the UNESCO sites.
