The history of the Kiy-island is closely connected with the name of the famous religious figure of the 17th century, Patriarch Nikon. According to legend, in 1638, Nikon escaped to the Kiy-island, falling into a violent storm. After becoming patriarch, he did not forget the island that gave him shelter in the storm. In 1656 Nikon built a monastery on the island.
