Kiy Island! ...
A tiny piece of land in the middle of the cold, harsh White Sea: only about 2 km long and 800 meters wide, but how many emotions you get after being there! Words cannot convey! Unique nature: huge rocks, sandy beaches, an abundance of medicinal herbs and extraordinary pine forests with age-old trees. The history of Kiy Island is closely connected with the name of the famous religious figure of the 17th century, the reformer of the Russian Orthodox Church, Patriarch Nikon. According to legend, in 1638, Nikon escaped to the Kiy-island, falling into a violent storm. After becoming patriarch, he did not forget the island that gave him shelter in the storm. In 1656, Nikon sought permission from Tsar Alexei Mikhailovich to build a monastery on the island.
