Hatley Castle

Far, far away in British Columbia, on Vancouver Island in the town of Colwood, there is a castle surrounded by a magnificent park. Of course, beautiful princesses never languished here in anticipation of brave knights, emperors did not take the oath of allegiance from the troops and lavish medieval feasts did not make noise, but nevertheless, its history is not devoid of aristocratic gloss - the first and only owner of Hatley Castle was the plenipotentiary representative of the English monarchs in Lieutenant Governor James Dunsmeier of Canada. He lived in the castle until his death in 1920. The lieutenant governor's heirs owned it for another 20 years, until Hatley was bought out by the government in 1940. Two years later, it housed the Naval College, and then the Royal University of Railways. The unusual view and picturesque surroundings of the castle have repeatedly attracted filmmakers - the series "Poltergeist: Legacy", the second part of the blockbuster "X-Men", and the film "Out of Sight" were filmed here. Since 1995, Hatley and the surrounding area have been a National Historic Landmark and are under state protection.
