Reichardstein (also known as the City of Metternich) is a castle unlike any other in Belgium. Built in the 14th century, the castle lay in ruins at the beginning of the 20th century until a university professor decided to restore it to its original splendor in 1969.
Another feature that distinguishes this castle from others can be traced in its name - Reichardstein was never part of historical Belgium - it was located in Germany. The castle stands on the territory of the High Marshes region, which was received by reparations from Germany after the First World War.
Reichardstein is just a few kilometers south of Signal de Botrange, Belgium's highest point (694 m).
