On the border of the states of California and Nevada is Lake Tahoe, the second deepest lake in the United States (501 m). The lake formed between 2 and 3 million years ago in the depression between the Carson Mountains to the east and the Sierra Nevada to the west, and is home to a number of high-altitude ski resorts and recreation areas.
The name of the lake was inherited from the Indians, who called the area "da hou ha ha" - the lake region. The colonialists of these territories simplified the pronunciation to “taho”.
According to Mark Twain, "Tahoe" in Native American languages means "Grasshopper Soup"
Lake Tahoe never freezes.
According to Indian legends, a huge, snake-like creature lives in the lake, which was nicknamed Tessie (by analogy with Nessie). Tessie was first talked about in 1982, when two police officers from Reno, while waterskiing, saw an incredibly large creature swim past them. The closest to unraveling the mystery of Lake Tahoe was Jacques Cousteau, who explored the bottom on a submarine in the mid-1970s. He returned to the surface with the words: “The world is not ready for what is down there” and until his death refused to publish research data and any photographs
