Dartmouth Castle is one of two fortresses that guarded the mouth of the Dart River in the Devon region.
The small fort was built in 1388 under the direction of John Hawley. Today it consists of two interconnected round and square towers, as well as the remains of a wall. The fortress was built on a rocky promontory very close to the water's edge.
The current building of the armory tower is the earliest surviving coastal fortress built specifically to store weapons. It was built between 1481 and 1495 and rebuilt again in the 16th and 17th centuries.
The castle was used as a defensive fortress until the 19th century, when it housed at least 5 huge 64-pound cannons. The 19th century artillery battery is the most significant part of the castle and was used for military purposes during the First and Second World Wars.
Dartmouth Castle is under state protection and inscribed on the English Heritage List.
