Sterling has long guarded the main northern routes of Scotland. It is believed that the first fortification appeared here in the 7th century. There is also an opinion that it was used by the Romans in the 1st century. Sterling is also known as the royal residence in which Queen Mary Stuart lived and was crowned. After returning from France, where she lived in the Château de Chenonceau, Maria was nearly burned to death in her own bed when the curtains accidentally lit up from a candle.
Like most Scottish castles, Sterling has its own ghosts. The most famous of them is the Green Lady, who appears in the most unexpected places. It is believed to be the ghost of the maid who saved Mary Stuart from the fire, but herself died of her wounds. The girl was wearing a green dress that day. It is said that the appearance of the hazy green figure has always preceded disasters, including several fires.
