Schönbühel Castle is located in the Wachau Valley on the right bank of the Danube. The structure rises 210 meters above the ground, which gives it incredible grandeur. The inhabitants of the nearby town of Melka even gave the castle a nickname - “the Wachau keeper”, because he, like a formidable guardian, has stood in this place for more than 1000 years.
Before the construction of the castle, this site was once a Roman fortress, and Bishop Passau, the first owner of the palace, thought it was the best place to build a new residence of his own. After the death of the clergyman, the ownership of the castle repeatedly passed from one family to another, but nothing could prevent this landmark of Austria from being one of the most magnificent buildings in the country. Today the owners of the castle are members of the family of Count von Oswald.
