The mantilla is a long silk or lace scarf-veil that is usually worn over a high crest (painteta) in the hair, and falls over the back and shoulders.
Traditionally, married women wear a black mantilla.
Perhaps thanks to the popularization of the mantilla by Queen Isabella II, it has become a tradition for women to wear mantilla for an audience with the Pope, for example: Laura Bush, earlier Hillary Clinton, Jacqueline Kennedy, Nancy Reagan, and also Grace Kelly - during her visit as a princess Monaco
