Altdorf is the main city of the Swiss canton of Uri.
As Friedrich Schiller conveyed in his work, Altdorf was the place where the famous apple shot took place. After Tell refused to greet the hat of Gessler (a high-ranking city official), he forced Tell to shoot an arrow at the apple on his son's head. According to legend, this happened on the market square of Altdorf, where in 1895 a bronze monument was erected depicting William Tell with his son.
