The painting was never exhibited and remained virtually unknown to the public.
The depicted scene is not just a love date: the young man's appearance leaves no doubt about his intentions - he asks for the girl's hand, which is confirmed by the flowers on the table and the girl's dreamy expression. The seriousness of the young couple's intentions is fastened with a cross on the girl's chest - a detail unusual for an unbelieving artist who, moreover, avoided painting jewelry.
The model for the girl was Alina Sharigo, Renoir's girlfriend, who later became his wife.
