Mauritshuis, The Hague
This is one of the most famous paintings by the Dutch artist Jan Vermeer. She is often called the Northern or Dutch Mona Lisa.
Some critics believe that the artist depicted his daughter in the painting.
The famous collector A. des Tombet purchased the painting at an auction in The Hague in 1881 for only two guilders and thirty cents. The painting was in a deplorable state. Des Tombet had no heirs, and he presented The Girl with a Pearl Earring, along with several other paintings, to the Mauritshuis Museum.
