Jacques Lemercier (1585 - 1654) - the first royal architect at the court of Louis XIII, who skillfully combined the principles of classicism and baroque in his work.
Jacques Lemercier belonged to a family of architects and masonry craftsmen already famous in the Ile-de-France. His grandfather Pierre Le Mercier and his father Nicholas Le Mercier were in charge of large construction projects in Pontoise (Saint-Maclou, Notre-Dame).
After a long study in Rome (during the reign of Henry IV), Jacques Lemercier, using the patronage of Marie de Medici and Cardinal Richelieu, becomes the first royal architect of Louis XIII.
