Charles-André van Loo (1705 - 1765) - French court painter of the Rococo era, the favorite of the Marquise de Pompadour, “the first artist” at the court of Louis XV. In 1736, van Loo decorates the halls of the Palace of Versailles with paintings of hunting scenes. In 1744 he painted scenes for the Dauphin's study at Versailles. In 1754 he was elected rector of the Academy, in 1763 - its director. In 1750 the artist was elevated to the rank of nobility, in 1751 he was awarded the Order of St. Michael. In June 1762 he was awarded the title of the first artist of the king. In 1764 van Loo undertook a trip to London and died a year later, at the zenith of his success.
