Rice terraces, carved by hand on the hillsides, are considered a man-made wonder of human civilization. By their structure, they are a self-irrigation system, designed so that the topsoil, in which rice grows, is not washed out by water. These terraces are approximately 1300 years old. The Honghe Hani Rice Terraces located in the Chinese province of Yunnan have been designated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
